Law 9B states: B. After Attention Is Drawn to an Irregularity,
1. (a) The Director should be summoned at once when attention is drawn to an irregularity. (b) Any player, including dummy, may summon the Director after attention has been drawn to an irregularity. (c) Summoning the Director does not cause a player to forfeit any rights to which he might otherwise be entitled. (d) The fact that a player draws attention to an irregularity committed by his side does not affect the rights of the opponents. 2. No player shall take any action until the Director has explained all matters in regard to rectification. Sometimes the TD is busy, or you have a playing director. The law-makers realised this and amended the 2017 laws. QUIZ: There is one situation which allows players to bypass calling the TD and generally handle the situation themselves at the table.
. AnswerImagine there are 8 cards left and declarer claims (as experts usually do) saying "strip the hearts and then throwing West in with a trump. Endplay" The poor opponents have no idea - they look starry-eyed at each other and one of them decides to ask the TD to officiate. But the TD is busy. Now what? 3 minutes left on the clock. West makes a suggestion: "I realise that in the previous laws play ceases upon a claim, but I have studied the new laws and it allows us to play it through. The claim is null and void and whatever outcome we get to, stands. Everyone agreeable, or do you want to wait for the TD?" West was spot on! The new law allows you to do just that. Answer: Law 68 D2(b) is new !!! |
Law 68 After any claim or concession, play is suspended. Very well done to Kit Gilmour, who was the sole entrant and she was 100% correct. Law 23 is also new (the old Law 23 was added to 72), but is part of a package of changes. The principle of "Comparable Calls" has been introduced in the latest laws - and it applies to Insufficient Bids as well as Calls out of Rotation (including Pass and Double/Redoubles). TDs must revise the amended laws Law 23 - Law 32 regularly. |
